Lab. sense and space

“This is a delightful exploration of space: elegant and clear drawings are translated into a simple habitable structure. Paolo Michele Salvetti has successfully considered topography, weather and materials to produce a beautiful and subtle experience on a very human scale.” Karen Martin and Anand Sagoo

When creating living spaces, it's crucial to respect the characteristics of materials and the interrelations between them as well, as they are most often reflections of our own perceptions of their personalities and haptic properties – the hostility of sharp objects, the warmth and reliability of wood and the intimate apparel of textile.

Accordingly, the material composition and the intimate contact they have with one another must be given careful consideration, since they behave in certain ways under certain conditions; wood must give way to stone, while metals are scratched by it; vulnerable materials placed underneath heavier ones will look squeezed and uncomfortable. When materials are used in intimate contact with one another, it is thus important to first understand the interrelated factors – how it responds to, adapts to, or rejects its surroundings, the same way that human beings respond to each other or to their surroundings and determine compatibility.

Our bodies subconsciously measure its surroundings and the spatial properties, materiality, scale, and distances within a space. From our eyes to our skin and muscles, we perceive and understand our surroundings, and through our stored collection of sensory memories, we know how certain things feel, smell, taste, or sound like before having even touched it. In other words, the naked eye can tell materials apart and identify their characteristics. Without us being fully aware of it, our vision then projects our body and touch onto buildings, into spaces and surrounding contexts, while telling us how to perceive these, sending messages to the brain of encouragement and invitation as well as of resistance and rejection.

With this in mind, it’s even more interesting to explore the architecture that surrounds us. Perhaps you, like us, have prejudices about the materials that it is made up of?
